PLAN A LIFE
|
Which way do you want to go?
What do you want to do? In general, you aren't going to get anywhere worthwhile without a plan. And it doesn't matter whether you're 15 or 50, you still need to think about and rethink your plan, because things are always changing.
This activity is especially appropriate for older children and teenagers. It's an adventure in self-discovery and goal setting.
Start by identifying a career or job you'd most like to have. Then, research what it takes to achieve your goal. You can even interview someone doing the job.
Here are some questions to explore:
|
- What education, training, skills do you need for the job?
- What kind of personality traits are best suited to the job?
- What kind of time commitment is involved and lifestyle (e.g. will it be "9 to 5", a "60-hour week", shift work, or time that is completely flexible)?
- What are the potential rewards of the job?
- What are possible drawbacks of the job?
- How could you find a position in the area you're interested in?
- Are there any opportunities to volunteer or be an apprentice?
- Are there any associations or clubs you can join?
|
After you've done your research, write a report explaining what you've discovered, what choices you've made, and why.
If a class of students is doing this activity, do a wrap-up with each student making a presentation for discussion in the group -- that way, everyone learns from each other, and people may discover new options.
